Except for some minor adjustments of features, this latest edition of the annual favorite remains essentially unchanged as part of a second generation introduced for 2017. Its advantages include off-road expertise in the Trailhawk® trim, plenty of supportive seating, superior interior materials, and plenty of safety options.

Are you ready to Skip the Frequent Gas Lines?

When leaving Philadelphia on long-distance adventures, you won’t have to worry about stopping for gas so often with an EPA-estimated 32 MPG on the highway from the 2.4-liter Tigershark® MultiAir® 2 4-cylinder. This fuel-efficiency comes, in part, from the built-in Stop/Start technology that shuts the engine down whenever the SUV stops and starts it up again whenever you release your foot from the brake pedal.

The MultiAir® 2 valve-train system optimizes the pressure on the intake manifold while managing the quality of combustion to maximize performance to 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. This performance encourages pulling of boats, jet skis, or snowmobiles weighing up to 2,000 pounds. Choose the available nine-speed automatic transmission to improve engine output while allowing for more aggressive acceleration. Also available for smooth shifting is a six-speed automatic. If you prefer more control over your gear changes, stick with the standard six-speed manual transmission.

Should anybody try to start the engine without the correctly encoded ignition key, the Sentry Key® Theft Deterrent System prompts the Engine Immobilizer to turn off the motor. A Security Alarm sounds the horn if someone tries to break into your vehicle.

Smoother 4x4 Fun

When you’d like a smoother ride over pothole-ridden streets or want to traverse rough country trails in comfort, you can choose from two available 4x4 systems. The Jeep® Active Drive can disconnect the rear axle to seamlessly go between fuel-efficient two-wheel drive and surface-gripping four-wheel drive. Jeep Active Drive Low in the Trailhawk® includes low range and a 20:1 crawl ratio to give you greater confidence on trails.

You can further define how you want to attack the roads beneath you with the Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System. It lets you dial in modes like Rock, Mud, Sand, and Snow, or let the system decide with Auto. Your choice synchronizes vehicle systems such as Electronic Stability Control, traction control, throttle, accelerator response, transfer case operation, and transmission shifting. The result is better mastery over your drive.

Do you want All-Weather Convenience in Your 2019 Jeep Cherokee?

As the cold weather of autumn and winter descends on Philadelphia, you’ll keep cozy with the available heated front seats and the available heated steering wheel. To help ensure that your front view stays clear, the available Wiper De-Icer heats the bottom of your windshield to help eliminate frost and snow. If wetter weather should prevail, the available Rain-Sensing Wiper automatically activates. Your side views also stay clear with the heated exterior mirrors that are available with turn-signal indicators.

When the fairer days of summer arrive, let sunlight flood into both roads with the available Dual-Pane Panoramic Sunroof. The front powers-open to bring in the fresh air. For more ventilation, you can also lower the power front windows with one touch.

Whatever the weather, an outside temperature display reveals how hot or cold it’s getting. Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control allows you and your front passenger to set separate interior temperatures. They are then automatically maintained even if there’s a raging blizzard or burning heatwave outside.

Wheel sizes range from 16 to 19-inches in such material finishes as Polished Aluminum with Gloss Black Painted Pockets, Painted Tech Silver, or Styled Steel. An available two-tone gloss black roof adds a touch of sophistication to an exterior that otherwise takes such colors as Spitfire Orange, Redline Pearl Coat, or Olive Green.

The Trail Rider

If your idea of fun includes exploring rough trails away from the main roads, the Trailhawk® trim proclaims its off-road prowess in five areas with the Trail Rated® badge.

For Traction, the SUV depends on a crawl ratio of 20:1 to conquer all kinds of surfaces with an assist from the Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System and the Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 System.

A turning diameter of 35.3 feet coupled with a wheelbase of 103.38 inches and an overall length of 173 inches improves Maneuverability in narrow forest paths and high-traffic areas.

To allow the vehicle to cross over large obstacles, Ground Clearance measures 8.5 inches with an approach angles of 30.3 degrees, breakover angle of 24.4 degrees, and departure angle of 33.6 degrees. Skid plates help protect the underbody.

Even when one wheel lifts over an obstacle, the others remain in contact with the ground due to superior Articulation.

Water Fording is possible at depths of up to 19 inches because of extra body sealing and insulated electrical connections.

Along with its distinctively aggressive front and rear fascia, the Trailhawk® sprouts red tow hooks on its front bumper. They allow you to pull off-road pretenders out of trouble. When you’re headed down a steep slope, this trim prevents you from having to sit on the brakes by providing Hill Descent Control. This features watches over your speed and deceleration so that it can automatically engage the brake to make your descent easier. You’re then free to focus on steering and enjoying the ride.

Commuting in Philadelphia With Your 2019 Jeep Cherokee

For commutes on highways and city streets, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee guards your safety with over standard and available 70 features. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration rates the SUV 5 out of 5 stars for protection against Side Barrier and Pole Crashes and 4 out of 6 against Frontal Barrier Crashes.

When Electronic Stability Control detects that your vehicle is headed for a direction that differs from where you want to go, it can selectively apply the brakes and reduce the throttle to bring your vehicle back under control.

All Speed Traction Control monitors for wheel slippage and then automatically sends more brake pressure to the slipping wheel, which maximizes the torque delivered to wheels that have all the traction.

If a rear-ender is imminent with the vehicle in front, available Forward Collision Warning alerts you and engages the brakes if you do not respond immediately.

LaneSense® Lane Departure Warning tells you if your SUV is straying beyond its marked boundaries while Lane Keep Assist nudges steering to bring your vehicle back in line.

Reverse out of your garage and the ParkView® Rear Backup Camera shows you that the coast is clear, complete with gridlines that reveal your direction and distance to hazards. The ParkSense® Rear Park Assist System informs you if you’re getting too close to an object nearby. If another car tries to cross your backward path, Rear Cross Path Detection warns you with a chime and a visual icon.

The Blind Spot Monitoring System protects your lane changes by warning you that a vehicle has entered just beyond your blind zones. This feature lights up an icon on the appropriate side-view mirror.

You can bring the kids to all your destinations by quickly securing their compatible child seats to the LATCH-ready Seat Anchor System.

If an accident does happen, you’re shielded from harm by the high-strength steel and advanced materials that are used on the frame. Motorized pre-tensioning seatbelts position the bodies of you and your passengers to receive maximum protection from airbags that are deploying up to seven airbags are available with versions for the driver’s knees and the side curtains.

All in the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Family

Among other Jeep offerings, the Compass stands out as a smaller and more maneuverable version of the Cherokee, which is 9 inches longer and almost an inch taller. Otherwise, both show similar fuel economies and performance ratings and carry the same number of passengers.

When you need the comfort of the Compass, but in a far larger and more powerful version, the Grand Cherokee is over 18 inches longer and increases cargo room to 35.1 cubic feet but contains the same seating capacity. The more powerful 6.4-liter V8 of the Grand Cherokee dishes out 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque but unsurprisingly drops fuel efficiency to 19 MPG on the highway and 13 MPG in the city.

Another more powerful performer, albeit in a smaller package, is the Wrangler, which is over 6-inches shorter and carries only four passengers but has more cargo space at 31.7 cubic feet. The Wrangler relies on a 3.6-liter V6 to generate 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque with lower fuel efficiency at 23 highway MPG and 17 MPG in the city.

At the same length as the Wrangler, the Renegade is also shorter than the Compass but can also accommodate five. The Renegade uses a smaller 1.3-liter inline-4 and has less cargo space at 18.5 cubic feet.

Other Manufacturers

One feature that the 2019 Jeep Compass contains that is lacking in the SUVs of other manufacturers like the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox is the Engine Immobilizer that guards against unauthorized use. Another is Rain Brake Support that activates when you operate the windshield wipers and allows the pump of the Anti-lock Braking System to push lightly on the brake pads to keep the rotors free of moisture.

For engine power, the Compass beats the 170-hp 1.5L 4-cylinder of the Equinox, the 138-hp 1.4L I4 of the 2019 Chevrolet Trax, the 148-hp 2.0L I4 of the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and the 144-hp 2.0L I4 of the 2019 Toyota C-HR.

The Compass shows better fuel economy than the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, which only gets an EPA-estimated 20 highway MPG and 22 city MPG. The Santa Fe also requires more room to turn at a diameter of 37.5 feet, does not include an Engine Immobilizer until higher-level trims, and has no Rain Brake Support. Standard on the Trailhawk® trim, Hill Descent Control is an extra-cost option known as Downhill Brake Control on all trims of the Santa Fe.
